From a young age, Mary dreamed of becoming a nurse, a calling born out of watching her father struggle to access basic healthcare. Later on, her ailing father passed on miserably, leaving Mary and her sibling helpless. Mary’s fate lied on well-wishers, sympathizers and supporters. Then came a turning point. Mary learned about the Undugu Empowerment Programs’ Higher Education Partial Scholarship. An initiative designed to support talented but financially challenged youth from rural communities. With the help of her teachers, she applied and was among the selected beneficiaries. The support covered part of her tuition and stationary, making it possible for her to purse secondary education. Beyond financial aid, Mary found something deeper at Undugu Empowerment Programs—a community that believed in her. Through mentorship sessions, she gained confidence, learned life and communication skills, and was inspired to give back. “For the first time,” Mary says, “I felt seen, supported, and capable of achieving my purpose.” Now in her third year of secondary education, Mary to excels academically and volunteer during community youth workshops organized by Undugu Empowerment Programs. She dreams of pursuing nursing course at tertiary level. She says beyond losing her parents, she was greatly influenced by the founder of undugu empowerment programs who is a committed nurse by profession and supports so many youths to achieve their dreams.
